An effective intranet

At its most basic level, an intranet keeps employees up-to-date and saves them time in their day-to-day work by providing tools and information relevant to each individual.

An intranet is essential in organisations with more than a few employees, especially if they work in different locations, where it helps keep them all up-to-date with company direction, spreads best practice and encourages collaboration.

As a minimum, an intranet is likely to contain:

  • company and sector specific news
  • day-to-day essential information (e.g. your phone list and key suppliers)
  • links to existing tools on your network (e.g. timesheeting and expense reporting applications)
  • a quality system of your standards and processes
  • company policies

Common intranet problems

Most organisations have an intranet, but often they are not as effective as they could be. Do you recognise one of these problems with your intranet?

  • It has no effective content management: All changes must go through one person in the IT department.
